22 days before I take off to Managua!
I'm going through SIT (the School for International Training), which has social justice themed programs across the world. My program is titled, Revolution, transformation, and civil society. I'll be staying with two families; one in Managua for the majority of the time, and the other outside of the city in San Ramon. While we're staying with our second family, we'll be learning about sustainable agriculture. We have two excursions in addition to San Ramon: El Salvador and the east coast of Nicaragua.
After my program ends, I plan on traveling about and hopefully exploring the natural beauty the country has to offer. : )
I haven't heard anything about the family that I'll be staying with, or students who are in the program with me, but I'm as excited as ever.
I have a few books to read before I leave:
Nicaragua: Living in the Shadow of the Eagle
Life is Hard: Machismo, Danger, and the Intimacy of Power in Nicaragua
Insurgent Collective Action and Civil War in El Salvador
I'm currently reading the first book, and it's very interesting. It discusses the US interventions in the country, and what kind of influences the States has had on their economy, government, social services, etc. It's frustrating to not have known how much the US has trampled on Nicaragua in the past decades.
I've started packing and saying goodbyes, but it won't hit me that I'll be away until I'm on my way! I hope that I can keep everyone updated through this blog. ..I just wanted to test it out now to make sure it works :)
